Should You Believe in ‘Unlimited’ Web Hosting?
One of the things that the best web hosting companies usually say is that they provide you with ‘unlimited’ services. This could either be in the form of unlimited bandwidth, unlimited storage, among other things.
They use the word ‘unlimited’ to help entice people to sign up to their service. Because of how rampant it is, it begs the question: should you believe in unlimited web hosting?
The truth is that they do offer unlimited services but only to a certain extent. That certain extent is actually told in the fine print, but who actually reads it these days?
Bandwidth
This is probably the most common selling point of many hosting companies today. You will probably see the words unlimited bandwidth or something like that and that is quite appealing for webmasters who want to enjoy amazing website performance by having that much bandwidth.
Unfortunately, you are not given limitless amounts of bandwidth, simply because if they do so, it can be abused and it can lead to problems that can affect the other users in a shared server.
How does bandwidth get affected in web hosting? Well, whenever someone visits your website, that will require some bandwidth. Whenever someone downloads from your page, that will also require some bandwidth.
So basically, anyone who tries to access your website and whenever you decide to upload your own files, then that would require some bandwidth as well.
Although there are some companies that would always tell you that they’re offering unlimited bandwidth, they will usually do so in a way that you can only upload a certain file limit. Typically, you will only be able to upload files not larger than 25 MB which, by today’s standards, is not that much.
This can be detrimental to web. Sites that provide media content to their audiences. Aside from that, you also have to think about unlimited storage space as well.
In my previous example, although you can technically upload a lot of things on your website, this is not to say that you are not limited to the size of the actual file. If you are planning on uploading a 1GB file, for instance, you will be out of luck.
Domain Names
You might find that there are some web hosting companies that will allow you to generate as many domain names as you need. Again, this is another common ploy to lure you into subscribing to their service.
You see, at the end of the day, they’re running a business and it would be to their detriment if they will actually allow people to generate as many domain names as they can.
Conclusion
All of the ‘unlimited’ services that are being given by hosting providers are mostly a ploy for them to entice you to sign up to their company.
Sure, there are some that would provide you with a lot more than others, but the reality is that unlimited services, especially when it pertains to web hosting, is actually non-existent.
